Background
The idea of Professional models was first introduced here, and highlighted the challenge that funding guilds as talent pools would quickly deplete the supply of BANK in the treasury.
Ultimately, this proposal sought to fund Guilds as professional models based on ( # of members x 10,000) + nested project funding = guild funding. We saw Professional models used again with Founding a Project Management Guild, which determined that Project Management was a critical element of successful projects.
Among the other two interesting articles, this proposal also references this article which states that historically, “Guilds helped to advance and expand the economies of the era by providing education and training for apprentices and by helping journeymen improve their skills. The specialization within a trade provided by the guild structure, along with the training and skills, led to increased productivity, increased wages, and higher standards of living. Guilds became a major source of employment for workers in cities, and guild membership was widespread.”
Monolithic means simply “one stone.” For example, a monolithic society is rigid and homogenous, not open to new ideas.
Although the funding model of Guilds has evolved, there does remain a large amount of confusion seasonally around funding, requiring a large amount of overhead and it creates a stressful environment for all.
The problem:
Value
- Guild, Departments and projects are unable to provide compensation based on
- There is no value behind being an L1 or L2.
- Grants Committee doesn’t consider what value a Project, Department or Guild adds to the DAO overall. They also do not differentiate the value between roles (skillset that is needed) or contributor (individual abilities and performance)
Values
While each Project, Guild, Department and contributor may have unique individual values, collectively we should value the value of the BANK token.
- The BANK token is currently being used for both Payment and Governance.
- Making it impossible for the token to be valued the same way by all.
- It also creates an unequal balance. This is seen when comparing the BANK token holders and the total amount BANK used in Snapshot votes. The voting power of one individual counts more than the voting power (amount of BANK) of the entire BanklessDAO community in the past 35 Snapshot votes.
- Over 200 voters and total of 24,626,000 BANK was used to vote bDIP-09
- This individual wallet holds 28,013,195 BANK.
The sheer operational foundations of Guilds within a Decentralized Autonomous Organization itself is quite oxymoronic.
As noted in Guilds As Professional Associations: a new funding model, this article notes that Guilds are Monopolistic by nature and design and also reveals the economic function of Guilds and challenges that ultimately lead to the decline in Guilds, which evolved into modern day unions and trade associations.
Currently, Guilds and Guild members aren’t allowed access to raise funds as projects are, such as through Gitcoin Grants. By nature, Guilds are monopolies, this presents barriers to resources that are presumably within another Guild’s “scope”. It also presents a difficulty in terms of the equality of exposure, if access to consumers is controlled by another entity, this is more prevalent when self-interest is involved.
According to Working in a Guild, Guilds should
- Provided day labor and wages for journeymen.
- Set standards for the quality of the goods produced.
Currently, neither are being done. Although there may be understandable reasoning behind this, however at fundamental level, Guilds have been kneecapped by the process of Governance, as Guilds are no longer able to define wages, hours, tools used or able to determine quality work. Meanwhile, the DAO itself:
-
Uses the same token for Governance and Compensation
-
Distribution rate set at 1,000 BANK/hr, which if it were to be converted into USD = $5.40/hr.
-
Doesn’t effectively monitor or enforce the 1,000 BANK/hr rule
-
Doesn’t set any differentiating standards for different skills.
All of these are topics that have been discussed countless times, by countless different contributors without change. A special engineering group was tasked to implement these items, distributed over 1 million BANK, and still there has been no resolve or implementation that benefits members for their work and time.
Taking the current economy and markets into consideration, the DAO is still overfunding without any accountability. Additionally, any “perks” for membership have been removed. This is all crippling in terms of member retention.
Possible Solutions
Solution #1
Funding Reformation - We are teetering amidst an economic crisis. The DAO should be responsible with spending and hold itself accountable, just as they expect other entities to. The DAO needs to create an economic moat, focusing on funding that demonstrates profitability, demonstrates efficiency and is a necessity. Simply evaluating by cutting back to essentials within

Solution #2
Create Bankless Services and Bankless Professionals, which runs in parallel to the Bankless DAO.
The purpose is to provide a platform for service providers and customers to connect and transact using the BANK token.
The BANK token is a utility token that will be used as a means of exchange.
Service providers can use BANK to gain access to the platform and offer their services to customers. Customers, in turn, can use BANK to pay for the services they receive.
Customers looking for services can search for service providers on the platform and pay for their services using BANK. Bankless Professionals offer skills such as team management, marketing and promotion, training and education, Website creation services, Development Services, podcast-in-box services, DAO-in-a-box services, legal services, Writing, Editing Newsletter, and access to a community of like-minded professionals.
These services will be offered at a fee, payable in BANK tokens.
Access is determined based on the membership that you choose.
Community Guidelines are per the platform used.
